A cat, a goat, and a human can look at the same world—but their eyes are designed to see it very differently.
Vertical pupils are common among certain predators that need to judge distance and strike accurately, especially close to the ground.
Horizontal pupils help many grazing animals scan a wide area for danger while keeping the ground in view.
Round pupils are common among animals that are active in daylight, taller predators, birds, and primates—including humans.
Pupil shape does not tell us an animal’s complete diet by itself. But it can give us clues about whether that species evolved mainly to stalk, chase, graze, escape, or search for food in a particular environment.
In today’s Subconscious Fat video, I explore what different eyes may reveal about an animal’s role in nature—and what our own round pupils might tell us about the way humans evolved to move, hunt, and eat.
The eyes may be the window to the soul.
But they may also be a window into the food chain.
