I used to live in Texas in the early 90s when I was there for my chiropractic education. I remember terrible floods back then.

Unfortunately, inconvenience and cost often prevent us from preparing for pretty predictable things.

Mr. Skeptical chimes in. “What’s so predictable about a flash flood? Doesn’t the word flash mean it’s not predictable?”

“Well, Texas Hill Country had earned the nickname "Flash Flood Alley"—a mix of steep limestone slopes, poor soil absorption, and brutal summer rains. On July 4–7, 2025, remnants of Tropical Storm Barry dumped over 20 inches of rain, causing the Guadalupe River to rise ~26 ft in under an hour—leaving devastation in its wake.”

“So you're saying it was predictable because it was known as ‘Flash Flood Alley.”

“Exactly, and with natural disasters like flooding only increasing due to climate change, it’s predictable.”

Among the 119+ lives lost, 27 girls and staff from Camp Mystic perished. Camp Mystic had an emergency plan approved just two days prior, but it never went into effect. Kerr County rejected investments in early warning sirens since at least 2016 due to cost concerns—even though neighboring Comfort, which installed sirens in 2024, had zero fatalities Full story here.

Mr. Skeptical sighs, “So much of the disaster could have been prevented.”

“Yes. Experts like Char Miller point out that all it would take is modest preventative measures—evacuation protocols, warning systems, stricter zoning on floodplains. Instead, inaction won out for "cost and inconvenience"

Mr. Skeptical gets up, sipping his sugared coffee, and looks at me through squinting eyes. “Are you going to try to relate all of this back to men over 40 being lazy?”

“Yes, I’ll get to that. The important thing to know about the recent Texas flooding disaster is that planners knew the risk. In 1987, a flash flood from similar geography killed ten children at a church camp near Comfort—but no one acted. Camp Mystic was set up on the same dangerous waters nearly 40 years later. Full story here.

“Men over 40 face a slow disaster: sarcopenia—age-related muscle loss—accelerated by excessive endurance training, poor resistance work, and the typical American diet. Just as Texas avoided upfront costs, men often dodge resistance training and better food because it's "inconvenient, uncomfortable, time-consuming, expensive," until they wake up flabby, frail, and injured.”

All echo the siren-free logic of Kerr County. But ignoring resistance training and diet is like leaving your warning system off until catastrophe strikes.

Practical Suggestions & Conclusions

Mr. Skeptical smirks and folds his arms. “Don’t you feel a little sleezy writing about a tragic event and comparing it to diet and exercise?”

My jaw tenses, and I take a sip of my buttered coffee. “I have a good friend who is diabetic and has been jogging for years, but he never did resistance exercises and never really followed my dietary advice.”

“Ha, meaning he didn’t want to be a caveman like you.”

I ignore Mr. Skeptical's irritating remark. “He’s now very sick and could be on his deathbed. If he had altered his diet and done more resistance exercises, he’d likely be in a much better health position now. If men over 40 know that sarcopenia is coming for them as they age, then why not prevent it as much as possible?”

“Well, I can relate, especially now during the summertime. I feel too lazy to even do a push-up.”

“It all comes down to the cost of doing nothing: from drowned dreams to dying muscles.”

Be aware.
