Why Are My Bottom Teeth Crooked?

I always thought I just “needed braces.” Now I think cereal, soft food, and a weak jaw may have had more to do with it than anyone ever told me.

Most people think crooked teeth are just genetics.

I used to think that too.

My upper teeth are fine. But my lower teeth are crowded and crooked, and my lower jawline never developed the way I wish it had. I always assumed I simply “needed braces.”

But the more I looked into it, the more I started asking a different question:

What if the problem started long before the braces conversation ever came up?

As a kid, breakfast was usually soft, processed food: cereal, toast, pancakes, oatmeal. Food that takes almost no chewing.

What if years of that meant my jaw never had to do much work?

Now compare that to people who grow up eating more meat, tougher foods, chewing more often, using their jaw the way it was designed to be used. In many traditional cultures, crooked teeth and crowded jaws were far less common.

I recently met two women from southern Brazil, near the Argentinian border. They told me they grew up eating meat constantly. Both had incredibly straight teeth and strong-looking jawlines, and neither had ever needed braces.

That got me thinking.

Maybe the modern problem isn’t that our teeth are too big.

Maybe our jaws never fully developed.

In this video, I explain why I think my own lower teeth ended up crooked, what chewing and diet may have to do with jaw development, and why the foods we eat as kids may shape far more than just our waistline.
