Family Dinner Isn’t the Problem. Your Food Order Might Be.

Protein and fat first. Carbs and dessert last. Why the sequence matters.

Family get-togethers don’t have to mean choosing between enjoying yourself and staying on track.

One simple strategy: eat the protein and fat first. Fill up on the steak, chicken, eggs, seafood—whatever quality protein is on the table—before reaching for the bread, potatoes, or dessert. You may be fuller, eat less of the foods you’re trying to limit, and potentially soften the glucose rise from the carbs that follow.

I hear Mr. Skeptical clearing his throat.

“But Hermann, it’s a family get-together. Am I supposed to sit there eating steak while everyone else enjoys dessert?”

Of course not. Enjoy the family. Enjoy the food. Just be strategic about what hits your plate first.
