What if your sunglasses are blocking more than just sunlight?
We’re constantly told: sunlight is dangerous. Protect yourself. Cover your skin. Put on sunglasses.
But here’s where things get interesting.
Researchers have found something remarkable in animal experiments: UVB exposure to the eyes can increase alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) and activate melanocytes elsewhere in the skin.
Even more interesting?
When researchers put UVB-blocking contact lenses on mice, that increase in α-MSH and skin pigmentation was strongly suppressed.
Think about what that means.
Your eyes aren’t just cameras.
They communicate with your nervous system. Your nervous system communicates with your brain. Your brain communicates with your endocrine system. And those signals can affect tissues seemingly unrelated to your eyes.
The body isn’t a collection of independent spare parts.
It’s one interconnected organism.
Does this prove that wearing sunglasses makes humans burn more easily?
No.
Does it prove that taking off your sunglasses will prevent sunburn?
No.
But it DOES challenge the simplistic idea that blocking sunlight from the eyes can have absolutely no effect on what happens elsewhere in the body.
And that’s the part I find fascinating.
Maybe our obsession with separating the body into specialties—eyes over here, skin over there, hormones somewhere else—sometimes prevents us from seeing the bigger picture.
I’m not suggesting staring at the sun. And if glare is interfering with your vision—especially while driving—wear the damn sunglasses.
But do I personally think our eyes were designed to experience natural daylight?
Absolutely.
And maybe the question isn’t:
“How can I block sunlight every second I’m outside?”
Maybe we should also be asking:
“What signals does my body lose when I do?”
Sometimes the most interesting science begins with questioning something everyone else stopped questioning.
